Prior Authorization Legislation Campaign

PAMED is working with State Rep. Marguerite Quinn (R-Bucks) who recently introduced legislation (HB 1293) to reform prior authorization in Pennsylvania because:

  • The process negatively impacts patient care — Patients could be without medication or not receiving services as they wait for the medication or treatment ordered by their physician to be approved by their insurer.
  • Can result in patients being in pain or a decreased quality of life as they wait for the medication or treatment to be approved.
  • Lacks transparency, standardization, and consistency.

HB 1293 would:

  • Increase transparency and consistency in prior authorization criteria
  • Establish standards
  • Reduce the overuse of prior authorization
  • Reduce manual processes
  • Develop a standard form
  • Improve response times for prior authorization determinations

Please check out www.pamedsoc.org/PriorAuth for updates on how you can help, including engaging affected patients in advocacy efforts so that their stories can be shared with legislators.
