PAMED is working with State Rep. Marguerite Quinn (R-Bucks) who recently introduced legislation (HB 1293) to reform prior authorization in Pennsylvania because:
- The process negatively impacts patient care — Patients could be without medication or not receiving services as they wait for the medication or treatment ordered by their physician to be approved by their insurer.
- Can result in patients being in pain or a decreased quality of life as they wait for the medication or treatment to be approved.
- Lacks transparency, standardization, and consistency.
HB 1293 would:
- Increase transparency and consistency in prior authorization criteria
- Establish standards
- Reduce the overuse of prior authorization
- Reduce manual processes
- Develop a standard form
- Improve response times for prior authorization determinations
