Job Opening: Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology

Drexel University College of Medicine is seeking an exceptional leader to become the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Drexel University College of Medicine and Hahnemann University Hospital. Applicants must be excellent, active clinicians, and have a strong record of clinical education. They should have knowledge of the local market and have a vision for future growth and high expectations for patient-centered care. The position requires an individual with strong interpersonal and leadership skills, significant administrative and management experience, and a demonstrated commitment to the missions of teaching and service, and have some experience in clinical research.

The Department includes comprehensive, glaucoma, cornea, retina, and refractive service lines, and employs optometrists (http://drexelmedicine.org/patient-services/eye-care/). The residency program currently includes nine residents, who also rotate through affiliated Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Located in the heart of Center City, our offices have 10 examination rooms, in addition to testing and procedure rooms, as well as an affiliated optical shop. Simulation space is housed in the College of Medicine on campus.

The Department of Ophthalmology is committed to serving the health needs of all patients in the Greater Philadelphia area. Drexel University Physicians employs over 270 physicians across 18 specialties, with 38 practice sites at 18 different locations. Drexel University College of Medicine represents the consolidation of two venerable medical schools with rich and intertwined histories: Hahnemann Medical College and Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Established in 1848 and 1850, respectively, they were two of the earliest medical colleges in the United States, and Woman’s was the first medical school for women in the world.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a MD and/or DO degree, be eligible for Associate Professor or higher at Drexel, and be board certified in ophthalmology with five years of administrative experience. Applicants will hold primary responsibility for guiding the educational programs of the department, identifying new opportunities for clinical services, promoting an inclusive and diverse environment and building upon a robust research program already in place.
