Summary of CMS Guidance on Medicaid Work Requirements

Yesterday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued guidance to the states on how they may seek waivers that would allow them to impose work or community engagement requirements as a condition of eligibility for some Medicaid enrollees.  The AMA has recent and strong policy in opposition to Medicaid work requirements.  The new guidance issued by CMS does include a range of safeguards that should protect most enrollees from losing their coverage, but we can expect that physicians in states that successfully apply for waivers may experience increased administrative burdens from patients seeking medical exemptions.
