President’s Message


PCMS President, 2016-2017

Daniel T. Dempsey, MD, MBA, FACS was sworn in as the Philadelphia County Medical Society’s 155th President on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, PA.

Daniel T. Dempsey, MD, MBA, FACS is Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Professor of Surgery at Penn Medicine, and Assistant Director of Peri-Operative Services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Born and raised in the small rural upstate New York town of Cambridge, he credits his family doctor Charles Cole and his high school science teachers, and most importantly his parents Jennie and Harry, for encouraging him to pursue medicine as a career. Dr. Dempsey attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and is grateful for the many physicians and surgeons there who inspired him including, Dr. Charles Rob; Dr. Seymour Schwartz; Dr. James Adams; Dr. George Engle; and Dr. John Romano.

Dr. Dempsey completed his surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is grateful to the multiple mentors and role models there for helping him, including: Dr. Jonathan Rhoads; Dr. Brooke Roberts; Dr. Clyde Barker; Dr. Jack Mackie; Dr. Ernest Rosato; Dr. Jim Mullen; and Dr. John Daly. Dr. Dempsey fell in love with academic surgery and with Philadelphia and has spent his entire career in GI surgery at Temple and Penn.

Dr. Dempsey has written over 100 original papers and book chapters. He has given more than 125 invited presentations at hospitals, medical schools and universities.

He continues to be named one of Philadelphia’s “Top Docs” by Philadelphia Magazine in their annual outstanding physicians issue, and for over 10 years he has been named annually one of America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America.

A member of The Philadelphia County Medical Society/Pennsylvania Medical Society for 27 years, Dr. Dempsey has been active in many organizations including: the American Medical Association; past president and member of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery; past president, and member of Metro Philadelphia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons; past treasurer, and current member of the Development Committee and Board of Trustees at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia; American College of Surgeons; American Surgical Association; Halsted Society; Southern Surgical Association; Society of University Surgeons; Association for Academic Surgery; Society of Surgical Oncology; Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract; Association for Surgical Education; Collegium Internationale Chirurgiae Digestivae; and Surgeons Travel Club.

Dr. Dempsey is especially grateful to his wife and son for the support, encouragement, and understanding they have provided over the past decades. He has been married to his beautiful wife Barbara for 40 years. Their wonderful son Patrick and his lovely wife Becca live in Boynton Beach, Florida where he works at Florida Atlantic University in the Center for Learning and Student Success and she works as a Montessori preschool teacher.
